New Archetypes from Paradox Rift

Set List | Card Translations | Visual Set List | Selected Proxies | New Archetypes
With the arrival of Paradox Rift this November, we’ll have a handful of new deck archetypes joining the fray. As always, some deck archetypes are better than others—some are meme tier and some are merely playable, fun decks without much competitive promise. Lists below are very rough drafts and are intended as a starting place for testing, not as tournament-ready deck lists. Consider creating and using proxies to test cards you don’t already own prior to making any purchases.
Froslass ex
BASIC STRATEGY
Evolve Snorunt into Froslass so that it can have its Evanescent Ability active, which makes you flip a coin when Froslass would be Knocked Out. If the result of that coin flip is heads, your opponent will take 1 Prize card less for Knocking Out Froslass. Meanwhile, power up Froslass ex with manual attachments, Raihan, and the Froslass from Chilling Reign, preparing it to use its Frost Bullet attack, which does 140 damage and then puts 20 damage on 1 of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon. Make Froslass ex more difficult to Knock Out with Rigid Band and Kricketune’s Swelling Tune Ability.
KEY CARDS
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Lunatone OBF 92 in combination with a Solrock to shield Froslass ex’s Ability from the effect of Path to the Peak.

Garchomp ex
BASIC STRATEGY
Evolve Gible into Garchomp ex via Rare Candy and attack using Garchomp ex’s Hydro Lander attack which does 160 damage and lets you accelerate 3 Fighting Energy to your Benched Pokémon in any way you like. Alternatively, attack with Groudon and its Magma Purge attack or Terrakion and its Cavern Tackle attack, which makes it immune to all damage from attacks done to it during your opponent’s next turn. Heal off damage from Garchomp ex with Cheryl.
KEY CARDS
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Pairing Garchomp ex with Lucario BRS 79 to make use of its Fighting Typing and Aura Sphere Volley attack, which does 10 damage plus 60 more damage for each Fighting Energy attached to Lucario.

Tsareena ex
BASIC STRATEGY
Evolve Bounsweet up into Tsareena ex with the help of Rare Candy. Using Tsareena ex’s Icicle Sole, put damage counters on 1 of your opponent’s Pokémon until its remaining HP is 30—ideally, you’ll do this to your opponent’s Active Pokémon while you have both a Brute Bonnet with an Ancient Booster Energy Capsule attached and Radiant Hisuian Sneasler in play. With Brute Bonnet’s Toxic Powder and Radiant Hisuian Sneasler’s Poison Peak ability, this four-piece combo will Knock Out even the bulkiest of Pokémon.
KEY CARDS
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Instead of the Brute Bonnet + Radiant Hisuian Sneasler combo, consider working this archetype into a Lost Box archetype in which Tsareena ex sets up several Pokémon to be Knocked Out, and Sableye takes all of your Prize cards at once by finishing them all off.

Chien-Pao ex
BASIC STRATEGY
Play down and evolve Frigibax into Baxcalibur to make use of Baxcalibur’s Super Cold Ability, which reads, “As often as you like during your turn, you may attach a [W] Energy card from your hand to 1 of your Pokémon.” Flood your board with Water Energy, pulling Energy from your deck with Chien-Pao’s Shivery Chill Ability, which reads, “Once during your turn, if this Pokémon is in the Active Spot, you may search your deck for up to 2 basic [W] Energy cards, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.” Use Chien Pao’s Hail Blade, which does 60 damage for each [W] Energy you discard from your Pokémon, to take Knock Outs.
